Muddy Stilettos Visit Our New Store
Say goodbye to fast fashion and hello to Courtyard – Surrey’s newest shop, offering a stunning range of eco-friendly fashion, shoes, accessories, jewellery and art.
I’ve got a bit of a thing about fast fashion. And not in a good way. One minute it’s on the catwalks, the next it’s on retailers shelves and pretty quickly it’s snapped up by consumers. It’s not long then, till those fast fashions end up in the garbage or recycle bin.
It’s not terribly sustainable, is it? But I’m not going to rant about it. I’m just going to tell you about a new store that’s opened up in Guildford offering, not just sustainable clothing, but also accessories, jewellery, skin care products – and art.
Say hello to Courtyard 2.0. It’s a second store for the long-established Courtyard in Angel Gate in the centre of Guildford and is situated just across the quaint cobbled street from it’s original big sister.
Owner Julia Jaconelli has no time for the throwaway fashion culture that so many of today’s shoppers embrace. Did you know that British shoppers throw away a million tonnes of clothing each year?
Julia is passionate about promoting sustainable fashion – buying from ethical brands, and buying classics that will see you through many seasons. And while the original Courtyard already encourages ethical shopping, the second Courtyard takes this one step further.
The common link between everything in Courtyard 2.0 is that all products are ethical and sustainable. Many are made in Britain – some from local suppliers – and those that aren’t are supporting women in places like Africa.
Julia has collated a lovely collection. You’ll find goodies such as the bamboo pop-doll tee-shirts and water bottles from British artist Charlotte Posner; wash bags and eye masks by British designer and illustrator Jessica Russell Flint – where everything is limited edition with no mass production in sight.
Handmade jewellery comes from Toolally, each piece handcrafted in their Yorkshire studio, as well as Beatrice jewellery, where each piece is also individually crafted.
For the body, there are a range of products from iuvo skincare, handmade in London, and 100% natural and organic, and vegan-friendly, not tested on animals, and with no nuts, palm oil, SLS or any parabens. Price points for this range are excellent, too, with the face and body scrub coming in at just £10. And, it smells divine.
There are jackets from Bird + Wolf, which re-purposes ex-army apparel creating beautiful original items out of each one – popular with the celebs at the moment! Have you seen Boy George wearing his?
Shake the Tree is a small Kenyan-based cottage industry revamping denim jackets, waistcoats and hats with beautiful boho styling. You’ll find them in Courtyard too.
You’ll also find designs from British designer Hayley Menzies – who works only with sustainable manufacturers in the UK and Europe, and trainers by Woden – an eco-friendly Scandi brand using the likes of cork and fish scales in their production.
Jeans are from Boyish Jeans and Tomorrow Denim, two top denim designers who use sustainable fabrics and an environmentally-friendly and cruelty-free production process.
For art lovers, check out the artwork by Surrey-based artist Jan Erika Design. And there’s even something for the little ones – Kitty Arden Wooden Jigsaws.
I’m super impressed with the thought that’s gone into collating the collection of beautiful things in the Courtyard store. And I’m pretty sure you will be too. Their official launch is on Wed 26 June, but the shop is already open.
